A1 13TH Close Scene analysisEllah Allajar

27:24 – 28:

Don’t believe the hype, don’t, don’t, don’t, don’t believe the hype

Stevenson: the war on drugs had become part of our popular culture, in television programs like Cops.

Man: When you cut on your local news at night, you see black men being paraded across the street in handcuffs.

Malkia Cyril: Black people, black men and black people in general are overrepresented in news as criminals. When I say overrepresented, that means they are shown as criminals more times than is accurate that they are accually criminals, right, based on FBI statistics.

Baz Dreisinger: I mean, I’m a big believer in the power of media full of these clichés that basically present mostly black and brown folks who seem like criminals in cages and then someone could turn off the TV thinking... “it’s a good thing for prisons, because, otherwise, those crazy people would be walking on my block.”

Cory Greene: Creating a context where people are afraid . And when you make people afraid you can always justify putting people in the garbage can.

Reporter: “Chances are you could run into a kid waiting to relieve you of your purse or wallet.”

Annotations

Audience: the audience of this part of the documentary is for people against the 13th amendment and who wants to know more about how black and brown people were differentiated during this time.

Techniques: the music in the first part makes you want to know about how the music connects to what is going to be said. You see black people getting arrested and going into police cars, which makes you wonder.

Malkia Cyril makes a point about black people being overrepresented in the news. She says this is backed up by FBI evidence which makes it more trustworthy. This way you, as listener, feel like what is said is real and makes you more wanting to know more.

  • Black people were all over the news in handcuffs and portrayed as bad people. This made it seem that black people could do harm.

  • The black community was presented on the news more than white people. This creates people to think black poeple are dangerous.

  • “Criminals in cages” —> on the news black people were seen in this bad state.

  • “And when people are afraid, you can always justify putting people in the garbage can” —> when people become scared the government could be able to treat them very badly.

  • This reporter is saying on the local news that people should be afraid of black kids stealing their purse. When things like this are reported on the news a lot of people would become afraid or would watch out for black kids.

Black personbeing handcuffed. This shocks you as viewer because you see how black people were treated at that time. The use of this visual also makes you want to know more about it.

This woman uses an almost aggressive tone of speaking. This makes you as a listener really get how bad the situation is.
