Deviance: the violation of social norms. Deviance is socially constructed and dependant on the time
and social context. (Goth dress. Until everyone is doing it, then its now accepted and normal. Or
even gender transition.)
Robyn: Can society determine what is right and wrong?
Consensus crimes: society is in consensus about deviance being a serious crime, the one who
perpetrates is a criminal.
Sociologists emphasize understanding the interactions, social structure, and social processes that lead
to deviant behavior, rather than individual characteristics.
Two stages in process of becoming a deviant: Primary deviance- isolated act or initial act (being dared by a friend).
Secondary deviance: takes on deviant identity and regularly violates norm. (Ballentine maar ook Giddens)
Criminilazation: a social group or certain activities are targeted for intensified monitoring, redefinition
and, ultimately, prosecution, this process is known as criminalization. 857
